From a sales perspective this generation with Fable 2, Fallout 3, Oblivion and Mass Effect - WRPG's are much better sellers than JRPGs this generation.

From a review score perspective Review score averages WRPGs have scored around 10 to 15 points better than JRPG's this generation.

JRPG's are stagnant since PS2 days and I do not have much hope that FFXIII or Star Ocean 4 will turn things around in regards to improving the JRPG genre.

WRPGs are main stream and appeal to gamers world wide. JRPGs are for the hardcore gamers, fans of that genre. JRPGs are niche market except for FF series, Pokemon and Dragon's Quest that sell well.

BTW: In regards to estimating sales of Last Remnant it will be lucky to sell 700 000 on X360 and it could reach around 400 000 on PS3. (assuming it is coming to the PS3 as well)

FFXIII and Star Ocean The Last Hope won't be making big changes to the JRPG formula but they will make subtle imrpovments(FF and SO games have been known to make suble changes to keep either from getting stale).  JRPGs aren't really stagnant.  It's just a misunderstanding.  It's just that the big JRPGs other than FF(and SO if that's a big JRPG series) don't even try to make suble changes.  However, look at Persona 3, 4 and TWEWY, they all differ from the typical JRPG formula.
