Sentence will be stronger without the like and combining the two sentences will let it flow butter.
"Civility seemed the case" this part feels a bit awkward.
"At the end of the day it seems to be a very human mentality though. " This sentence is quite awkward.
"Candidates attack each other viciously and football fans go ravenous against fans of any other team but their own." I think except would work better than but.
Other than those issues, looks good, I really like your conclusion because it's completely true. I myself always forget what I have and constantly beat myself up for wanting more. The structure looks good and I can easily understand the main points.
