I mean hell, how would you react if it was up to you and your friends to save the world from an overwhelming alien force.  You'd probably be a big wuss about it for a long time until you got some success and confidence along the way.

You're right about that.

A thief is just not someone I see as a usual everyday guy. It'd be cooler if Vaan was in the imperial army, and then conviced into leading a revolution.
