However, the program wasn't forward-thinking enough to understand that it'd get outdated. In the modern era, we have far better means of corporate, small business, and self-employed retirement systems, and SS needs scrapped, and quickly. I was shocked when Obama (and others on the left) *accused* John McCain of wanting to privatize Social Security - As if it was a bad thing! At any rate, I agree that it was needed then but is not needed, in it's current form now.

I remember Hillary Clinton during the Democratic primaries had posited a hypothetical situation which she thought was most ghastly: what if Social Security had been and was voluntary? She thought it would have been a tragedy if Social Security had been voluntary. It is unfortunate that politicians oppose voluntary social security.
