At the time however, the country needed the financial security that FDR provided many people through his programs. You can argue whether or not it was communist/socialist, but the bottom line is that he did what was necesarry at the time and it worked.

I'm not disagreeing that a mandatory pension system for Americans is a bad idea. It's socialist, but not entirely bad.

However, the program wasn't forward-thinking enough to understand that it'd get outdated. In the modern era, we have far better means of corporate, small business, and self-employed retirement systems, and SS needs scrapped, and quickly. I was shocked when Obama (and others on the left) *accused* John McCain of wanting to privatize Social Security - As if it was a bad thing!

At any rate, I agree that it was needed then but is not needed, in it's current form now.
