I personally liked this, war is not about good vs evil but rather us vs them, you can have a wide spectrum of belief, personality and motivation under one banner due to this. I'm almost certain that Sega didn't try to do this intentionally but it came of well.
An army can have both racist and humanist within its rank afterall.
