Even as a Playstation family fan boy, it would seem to me that having the Wii being the top-selling console in the world and the DS the top selling handheld in the world, kind of puts Nintendo at #1 again.
Now to stay #1 they are going to have to bring out good games. Not having an E3 next year that seems like a disappointment to many people would be a step in the right direction. And I know there are a ton of you that will disagree with this statement, but at the moment Wii Music is looking like it is going to have a hard enough time reaching a million copies sold let alone equalling the successes of Mario Kart Wii, Wii Play, Wii Sports and Wii Fit. Really the only way that they are going to move many Wii Music's at this point in time is if they include it as the pack-in with the system. And Wii Music was thought by the Nintendo execs to be their big game of E3. I'm not sure if Nintendo's other big title Animal Crossing resonated much more with the fans either. I'm sure it will sell to the series past fans but as far as being a title that will bring new owners to the Wii, I don't know. I don't think Animal Crossing is as popular as Mario, Metroid, or Zelda, and equally it doesn't seem like the type of game that will attract new people in the fashion that Wii Fit or Wii Sports did. Actually judging by the DS sales of Animal Crossing: Wild World, then one would expect the Wii game to do well.
Wii Sports Resort looked fun.
So Nintendo will need more strong games in traditional gaming genres to really have an excellent run throughout the rest of the generation. This year their E3 showing kind of made them seem like the hare in the race between the tortoise and the hare after he decides to take a nap. I don't think it was intentional, but Wii Music selling only in the 20,000-25,000 range in its third week in Japan is far from the success of past Wii games. Wii Fit, for example, sold over 125,000 copies in its third week of release in Japan.
My most anticipated games: Whatever Hideo Kojima is going to do next, Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Gran Turismo 5, Alan Wake, Wii Sports Resort. Cave Story Wiiware.
