Yeah, this elitization happens with every area of culture because the critics are the more conservative the older the type of culture is. It has happened in literature, music, fine arts and movies. However, I usually agree with critics and I look past numbers to see if there's something interesting.
I don't think the Smash Bros. Brawl is going 9+. The developer has stated that the Wiimote control system was hard to make and adviced not to get rid of GC controllers. The game will be like the 6 years old Melee in almost every aspect and that's not a good thing.
