The game's concept has appeal, and the presentation was good enough to impress people. Reviews are not the end all of a game's performance in the marketplace. Look at Star Wars: TFU, for example.
Good thing too, since some amazing games (Wii Fire Emblem, PS3 Disgaea 3, and PSP Brave Story come to mind) are rated mediocre by the media, but adored by the fans.
