My repair timeline went like this:
10/22 X360 went Kaput
10/23 Called MS. Got shipping label emailed to me that night
10/24 Mailed X360
10/30 X360 arrived in TX. Replacement united mailed same day
11/04 Received replacement unit.
13 days (9 business days) without my Xbox. It allowed me time to catch up on some of my PS3 games. Got LBP and put some nice time into the Resistance Beta.
I agree that waiting just a few days sucks though. Even worse if it's your only console
