Great, now every time I come into this thread I'll see that boxart...the boxart of my most hated game of all time

That's hilaroius... would you hate it as much if it weren't loved by others? Or in other words, is it the overrated-ness a big factor? That's sort of how I feel about some things... the second and third LOTR movies in particular.

Well, maybe I wouldn't have even played it, because I (and I always said this) played it after seeing Gamespot's 9.0. Maybe you're right, I played the game expecting it to be good and it was horrible, while for example, I played Halo expecting it to suck (I did because a promise I had made), and it sucked, so I didn't feel disappointed. Yeah, maybe it increases my hate a bit. Still, I think I would hate it even if it were one of the worst rated games of all time...like it should be

I read your review about the game, and i noticed two things inmediatly

1. You say you hate Akira Toriyama's designs because you hate Dragon Ball, but Chrono Trigger is in your list of RPGs and that's another game with designs by Toriyama...

2. It seems that you never played a Dragon Quest game and this was your first one, because it was brought to your attention because some review... I recommend you to play the other ones to see if there's one you like...

Now, i respect your opinion about hating the game, but to say that it should be one of the worst rated because you hate it??? (while a whole army loved it, in fact it was the 1st DQ game to have so much love outside of Japan), hey, i don't like Halo but i don't say that it should be one of the worst rated...

1) Yeah, I know. To keep quoting myself:

http://www.vgchartz.com/forum/post.php?id=1392910

"The other Toriyama game I played is Chrono Trigger, I guess the design didn't bother me much there since, well, it's mostly sprite based"

And besides, I have to admit that the design in CT is one of Toriyama's best...that's not saying much, but it's bearable enough to not bother me

2) Sorry, but after this game, I'll never, ever, play another DQ. I've learned my lesson, I'm not making the same mistake twice. Plus, now that I'm a bit more informed, I've read that most DQ have a pretty similar battle system and don't have a good story, so I'm not playing a game similar to VIII again. So you can rest easy that I won't be bitching about how horrible is DQIX when it comes out.

As for the rating part, it's a casual comment, it shouldn't be taken serious. But I'd love to see review sites giving ratings that are identical to my tastes (for example, I'd love to see Suikoden II with the 10/10 that for me deserves in every site). That way there wouldn't be overrated or underrated games for me. They don't, sadly. The only thing that's possible is to comment how much you disagree with X review

Agreed about DQVIII being overrated.  The thing I don't get is that DQVIII gets away with AAA scores from critics yet another turn based RPG like Lost Odyssey gets praised by some but has some complains with a few critics downright bashing the game.  Explain that to me.  I must add that LO has it's flaws but it is a gem if you look past them.
