I think the PS3 has already made a difference in the current console generation. Sony fans just need to take a step back, take a deep breath, and recognize the PS3 for what it is, and what it always was: a seed for BluRay, a media center appliance for media downloads, AND a games console. Whether it was a wise strategy or not really isn't going to be answered for another decade, until we can see the effect HD movie downloads has on the rental market. IMHO, BR was the worst misfire of all, because its nothing more than a stopgap until the next thing comes along, but Sony is married to it now, for better or worse. Gamers would enjoy life a lot more if they'd just enjoy the games/systems they have and stop worrying about what everybody else is playing/playing on. Sony afficianados in particular would be wise to be happy with some really cool, proprietary stuff Sony has on the horizon, such as organic LED displays, that will ensure Sony will be around for a long time to come if they'd just get the hell out of their own way with their assinine, diabolical plans to rule the world of media formats -- like the crazy villain with a new plan every three years that winds up an Epic Fail. The PS3 still sells, still has developers, and is not going away anytime soon. Eighth gen will probably launch before this behemoth hits $200, so I'd just give up hope on winning some "console war" now. It's third place, but it's better than being defunct altogether. The market is proving plenty big enough to support all three.

I can not disagree with anything you said but I just wanted a damn gaming system, not a Blu-ray / Cell trojan horse. I never really cared about Sony as a whole, I just wanted an affordable system with good 1st party and 3rd party support that would compliment a gaming PC well. I guess at this point that's not going to happen.
