But 2001 <> 2008 in terms of life span.
PS2 had been out for 2.5 months in NA and 1.5 months in Europe when 2001 began.
PS3 had been out for 13.5 months in NA and 10 months in Europe when 2008 began.
Thus, this is not an apples to apples comparison.
Also, given the manufacturing delays, it is very possible that much of 2001 had supply issues for PS2 whereas there has been no such widesprad supply limitation in 2008 for the PS3.
That being said, 2002 might be the better comparison. And since 2002 PS2 sales were greater in Americas and Others (according to VGChartz) than 2001 sales for the PS2, your logic fails.
