Exploration is the key aspect of survival horror. I'm not talking about GTA type of freedom (sandbox). But a game that drops you in a world and tells you "figure out how to survive this". Resident evil, Silent hill...the best horror games always have an exploration element to them. Hence why you always have a map in those games...
Without it you may as well give me unlimited ammo and call it gears of war.
