I have honestly never had any issues with disk scratching. Lay it in the horizontal, and do not move it while it is playing a game. This seems like common sense, but there are some players who do just that. Ask someone who has scratched a disc, and nine times out of ten it will be user error. Not saying that it does not happen, but it is most definitely overblown. House the console in a secure place, and you should be fine.
I have also never noticed the hard drive to have gotten hot even after playing a game off of it for five or six hour stretches. In fact due to the location of the drive it should probably remain cooler then most built in drives. Well over half its surface is not connected to the machine.
