Based upon the reviews I am somewhat disappointed in what this title appears to be, and let me be forthright with everyone were this title a true platforming title I would probably not give it a second look. I probably would not have given it a first look. I have said it before and I will say it again. Games in this genre have about zero replay. Yes they may take thirty hours to defeat, but once defeated you have no driving desire to play them again. I have half a dozen platforming titles collecting dust as is, and if I felt any need to play a similar game I would just play one of those.

That said I was somewhat hopeful that this game may be a suitable hybrid. A current generation Diddy Kong Racing which was Rares hybridization of a platforming title and a cart racing title. Perhaps Microsoft's answer to Mariokart. When I heard of vehicle customization, online play, and player control of said play I was actually genuinely excited. This game sounded as if it might have the kind of freedom one enjoyed in Goldeneye. Where players got to decide modes, weapons, rule sets, and the parameters.

Unfortunately the more I read the less excited I find myself. Yes I prefer challenge objective over collection. Yes I welcome an online mode. Yes I always welcome customization. However the more I read the more watered down the online component seems. I have read nothing of true battle modes, or true race modes. More to the point the modes seem to be objective competitions like relays rather then head to head competition.

For me this game will be won or lost online, and right now it sounds as if it is in the gray area where the modes may entertain for a mere handful of days, or they could be the kind of modes that entertain for months. I think this game could sell millions or just a couple hundred thousand based on these modes. I would like to read that Rare plans to introduce more modes in the future closer to battle modes, race modes, or capture the flag modes.

Right now its sounding as if this game could have spent a little more time in the incubator. Were the game to come with those online modes standard there is little doubt for me this would be a true AAA title. Well beyond worth a purchase. Anyone else getting the feeling that Rare is missing a golden opportunity. The online mode were it more competitive may have resulted in a break away hit in the same area as Smash Brothers, or Mario Kart?
