FFVII is vey dated because the game isn't that great to begin with and the graphics were even shit when the game was first released (just because you can make something in 3D doesn't mean you should).
FFVI though isn't dated. The sprites and background are still beautiful and the story and characters are still just as fantastic. Those sprites express more emotion than most characters in fully rendered cut scenes do today.
