Its more common than you think. Most don't go to the cops because they A.) don't want the public to know of the embarrassment B.) Its difficult to prove C.) In most cases one is usually in denial that it was in fact a rape until long after it happened
Usually people only tell their female friends about it long after its happened. Which is how I know how common it is.
