I guess there are two questions in this thread, and they keep getting mixed up:

"Is Gold membership worth $50?" And: "Is the 360 worth buying, if you don't plan on getting a Gold membership?"

The first question wasn't directly asked by the OP, so I'll go ahead and answer the second question: Yes.
