He wasn't quite half American-Indian, only 3/8th's.
Generally though I think you're right according to the prevailing way of determining race in America. If you're 100% caucasian then you're a caucasian. If you have tainted blood from any other racial group then you belong to that group. I assume you're familiar with the terms octoroon, quadroon, quintroon and "high yeller", yes? Along these lines Obama would have been more properly called our first mulatto president. These words aren't used anymore but the thinking behind them still persists.
