It wouldn't be that big of an issue. A higher speed drive could run at lower speeds if it needed to to run certain games. Also, the only real problem with a faster drive for older games would be possible bus fights for streaming. This shouldn't be a problem considering that the 360 just added the harddrive option that basically offers faster reading (like a faster drive would) and there haven't been any reports of problems there. Most developers wouldn't leave how the bus is being used to chance, so it should be fine in almost all games.
However, the 2X PS3 drive is much quieter than the 12X 360 drive, if Sony makes a PS3 with a faster drive it might gain some of the noise of the 360.
