We have enough coal here to run everything for a few hundred years... we just need some super light, cheap, and safe rechargeable battery or a cheap safe coal gassification method, oh yeah and to get politicians out of the Oil Company pockets.
There's no reason why today we couldn't start installing wind mills, solar cells, coal and gas production, bio-diesel and natural gas vehicles, and improve public transportation. The thing is, oil is still cheap. Even $4/gallon is cheap in the big picture. Few people want to commit or invest.
I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.
