Most addictions are bad, making you less a part of the real world. World of Warcraft can be extremely bad. But it doesn't alter your physiology.

I don't really know how to respond to this. I thought that World of Warcraft was generally accepted to be bad for people's social life, even dangerously addictive sometimes. So for me, that puts the entire question into the "not figure of speech" category.

I would say that "it's like a drug", not "it's a drug". But I guess if the difference isn't important to you, by all means, say it's a drug.
