Did you check his sig? Since he has a PSN ID listed, he probably already has one. 
Well that and he says: "One thing is for sure: I'm going to buy a couple 3rd party games on the PS3." 
Anyway, that sucks. My old core 360 sometimes had trouble reading discs. For the most part it would be fine and occasionally it would just throw me back to the 360 menu with an error. I never did bother getting it repaired though.
