It is because there was more of a multiplayer aspect to games. Now we are separated but somehow brought together with online capabilities.
Word of mouth was much more important and people communicated more about games. There was less fanboyism and TV had better programming (Nickelodeon in the 90s was infallible).
Chea cash-ins have unfortunately taken over a larger part of the industry and some people have left companies since the 1990s.
