I have no idea if this specific problem is IE related or something he has installed, but I can tell you and him both that IE is not a secure browser. It only takes one website you visit to infest your computer with a virus or turn it into a bot. Neither of you have to believe me or even listen to me, but realise that I don't get paid by anyone to say this so I have no incentive other than genuinely trying to help.
Both of these links are to the security analysis group known as Secunia. These guys are professionals, see what they have to say about IE 7.x (first link) and Firefox 2.0.x (second link). They give ratings for how critical the worst problem is, IE 7.x has "Highly Critical" and Firefox 2.0.x has "Less Critical". Ironically IE6 is more secure with a "Moderate" rating. But anyways you can delve into all of the problems and they will give you the specific details of the flaws and if you really want you can test them for yourself.
