I've just played through the game and I've been wondering the same thing. The game has some original gameplay mechanics and an interesting setting, I don't regret my purchase and I'm looking forward to the sequel. But I really can't understand why it gets all the praise it does.

Nothing within the game hugely stands out, and I actually think that the story is not very good, where 'the story' is defined as the events that occur from the moment you begin the game to the moment you finish it. It's really quite bare except for a couple of interesting twists toward the end, but then the end itself is unfulfilling.

When people talk about the story I assume they are actually referring to the backstory, which is more interesting. But since it is delivered entirely through audio logs and radio messages it falls rather flat. Audio logs are not a good way to deliver a story.

Intellectually I don't think the game has much to say either. It just seems to be a rather hackneyed warning against trying to create a perfect society. I must say it wasn't so predictable that I found it grating, but again I'm not sure why there is praise given to this area.

Anyway, I enjoyed it. I just wonder how it ever came to be one of the highest rated games of all time.
