You are making the assumption that only leaderboard numbers are right, and they are not. 40% of Xbox 360 users are not online.

So that could make up a significant portion of sales that you would never know about.

 

Just for fun: Using the ratio from Viva Pinata: TiP leader board and VGZ sales tells me that Fable 2 sold just over a million copies on the first day. That sounds really high, but it will be fun to compare the numbers when they are out. The first one sold just over 375,00 copies the first week, so it should beat that.
