Final Point -

The market cannot be broken down into two sectors.

HARDCORE | CASUAL

It can on a very broad degree be broken down into three levels

HARDCORE | CASUAL | NON-GAMER

However simply sweeping a company into one heading is just ridiculous.

It is in the best business interest of the company to appeal to as many parts of all segments as possible.

Nintendo simply wants to blur the line between HARDCORE and CASUAL so that they can have games that work between both, the original Super Mario Bros is an excellent example of this kind of game.

The game should be accessible in controls to everyone and then challenge should come from things that you do in the game rather than trying to master the controls.
