Actually, M$ stores a ton of data for each GamerTag. All previous purchases, achievement info, friends lists, etc.

So do they not store that for Silver accounts? (Rhetorical question: They do)

So again, what does gold hold over silver aside from online play? Not storing data, they're happy to do that for free for silver owners.

Face it, you pay 50 dollars a year to just play online.
