I'm sure it will also hurt sales. People will go in expecting to buy LBP on Tuesday, find out it's not available and will spend that pile of cash burning a hole through their pocket on something else.
Sony probably would have done better press wise to release the game, help stir up some faction against it, wait until it hits mainstream media and then release the patch. As it stands this will probably get overlooked with the US presidential election and world economic crisis taking center stage but Sony would probably prefer that over any possible PR backlash.
