It's not much, but considering that XBL remains the only service to charge for something as simple as being able to play online, it still seems as though the charges are unnecessary.

It makes a lot less sense when XBL isn't your primary online gaming platform; if you're not using it regularly, why pay for the service?

But if you are, then it really isn't a big premium, it's just that other service providers aren't charging for the same services.
