It felt more like I was exploring than 3. It had challenge, an adrenaline rush, and you didn't have total control of everything around you. In 3, you did all those things, and on the harder modes, the difficulty seemed ... I don't know .. fake? It wasn't really more difficult, they just took longer to kill.
Should be noted that I haven't played 1 though.
