It was just a rumor made by a small pocket of the Sony extremists on Pro-Sony Sites after the announcement of La Noir ("Because why else would the PS3 get a rockstar exclusive" logic). It's snowballed from there even fooling a few analyst and popcasts over its short life thus far, further perpetuated by well wishers, people who think it makes sense and those hoping the hype will get consumers to pick up a PS3.
I honestly would really have to question Sony's ability to buy any game studio of that size at this point and not threaten their already fragile economic sitatuion with the gaming divisions. Also, just because you can buy the studio doesn't mean you can buy all the people behind it. MS learned that the hard way with Rare.
