It really isn't a coincidence ...
There are several factors which influence why a console is more popular than another, and the most powerful console is (typically) one of the last consoles released in a generation which can have a very negative impact on many (if not all) of these factors. With the obvious exceptions of the Wii and the Nintendo DS, I can't think of a market leading console that was not released 12 to 18 months (or more) before the most powerful console of the generation was released.
