That's exactly what I felt when I first heard it. I felt like an idiot for not believing the countless friends who told me "no really, outside of their commercial pop singles, they have one genius epic album."
Brian Wilson basically went insane trying to top the Beatles. Well, he was porbalby already nuts by that point, but his battle with the Beatles was definitely a contributing factor of him going totally over the edge.
The part of Walk Hard where he wanted a thousand didgeridoos and he was on the trampoline for days at a time? Those were Pet Sounds-era Brian Wilson jokes. I think Wilson was in a sandbox instead of a trampoline though.
Oh, and now you gotta czech out Brian Wilson's SMiLE album. It was going to be the follow-up to Pet Sounds, but he went crazy and didn't finish it for 40 years. It's good.
