zexen - From the developer walkthrough, the button timing isn't mandatory - It's more akin to Lost Odyssey where there are bonuses with proper timing.
Not only that, it isn't for 100% of attacks. It looks like it keeps you on your toes with the QTE's for various characters in battle.
