Back on-topic: GoW II Will be the last time a PS2 game will be top of the charts for America.
Later on the system will start to sell less and less units but it will still be remarkably good till end 07. Because of the HUGE userbase it will still be supported by major developers like Midway, EA, Ubisoft, Take2 and others... The sales will really slow down after that and only EA will bring FIFA to it in the end of 08... :P... Just like Fifa 04 on PS1. My guess is it will be in the state the NGC is now around Jan/March 08.
I think you're expecting it to die down way too early ...
From now until the end of 2007 the PS2 will be in a price range which makes it very attractive and will have a game library which is unmatched; this will make it one of the most popular platforms for the entire year. In 2008 the PS2 will have a smaller library of new games being released, and will be facing strong pricing competition from the Wii, but will continue to sell reasonably well because people who are still interested in PS2 games will replace broken PS2 systems rather than buy an expensive PS3. After holiday 2008 the PS2 will probably be selling at current GBA sales and will be in its dying days ...
