I just talked to Netflix about the reason they increased rates for BD accounts for the next month, and they told me outright that BDs were breaking in the mail twice as often as standard DVDs and that high format royalty rates made BDs twice as expensive per disc as DVDs.

It's disappointing that BDs aren't as durable as regular DVDs, but I have to say that I've gotten very, very few DVDs from netflix that were iether broken or wouldn't play, and I never managed to damage one of my own DVDs (movies or games) beyond the point of playability.

Even though Netflix tells us that, by the numbers, BDs are less durable than DVDs, it probably doesn't matter as durability isn't a problem for DVDs.
