The fire bombings we did to Japan killed way more people than the nukes we used. The nukes were used to get Japan to surrender without killing possibly millions more Americans and Japanese lives if we did invade the homeland. Also, Truman was under pressure to keep the Russians out of Japan because Russia declared War on Japan right before we bombed Japan.
