Some of the best scientist in the US are working in DC right now, and have been working for 20 years, on what to do with the nuclear waste. I wouldn't doubt that the same thing is happening in other countries. If there is a way, those people will find it. In the mean time, I think we need more geothermal plants. The western half of the US is great for geothermal and if you want to dig deep enough, the eastern half can as well. Iceland is trying to become completely energy independent with technology like geothermal and if a big country like the US really wanted to we could really push that technology further than anyone could have imagined a few years ago.
edit-megaman, I believe you mean fusion, we have been doing fission for decades.
