My top 3 would be
1) Satyajit Ray: The greatest film-maker to come out of India, and second in prestige to Kurosawa alone when Asia is concerned, he remains the best Director in terms of portrayal of human emotions in a realistic manner. The Apu trilogy remains some of the finest cinema this world has seen, in my opinion
2)Krzysztof Kieslowski: he has a pretty extensive body of work but the most important are The decalogue and Colors trilogy. Now the Decalogue is my personal favorite piece of film-making( it should be used by acting schools as reference material).
3)Stanley Kubrick: best western Film maker, has a body of work whose diversity is a thing to behold, ranging from sci-fi to court drama to cheesy horror, all the while keeping a legendary standard(except for Shining which was truly just Jack Nicholson all the way)
"The accumulated filth of all their sex and murders will foam up about their waist and all the whores and politicians will look up and shout "Save us!"...
....and I'll look down and whisper "no."
