Compared to us, the northern european countries, they are much poorer. They're all crazy religious people so it's no wonder though.

Uh, yes? Spain and Italy are full of insane catholics. Those countries are basically still in the stone age compared to rest of secular Europe. Only Poland might be worse in Europe.
