The average 72-year old hasn't had cancer, and has a less stressful life. Obviously these probabilities are just estimations.

He had skin cancer which is one of the easiest cancers to deal with when caught early ...
Besides that, a lot of elderly people you will meet will claim that retirement is the #1 killer of old people. I have never heard a really good reason for this but people who enter retirement and are highly productive and have a purposeful life generally live longer and healthier than those that don't ... An example of this is my Grandparents are in their mid 80s and still go out to chop wood for their wood burning furnace to heat their home over the winter.
Basically, I don't think that there is nearly as high of a likelyhood of John McCain dying as some people seem to think ... Certainly, it is more likely than Obama but there have been countless seemlingly healthy men in their late 40's/early 50's who have suffered a stroke or heart-attack and died (or been left in a condition where they could not continue as president).
