Ok I stand corrected then. I just remember some DragonBall Z episodes I watched and it was always energy shit flying out of people's hands and vast empty deserted landscapes where two combatants could think and talk for an hour before diving into eachother and creating a 90 mile crater in the ground only to rinse and repeat for next week. It seems Dragon Ball was a much different animal than Dragon Ball Z was.

I'm sure it is. That's a problem with all manga turned anime. They try to recreate the manga frame by frame and forget that the same techniques that work in books do not necessarily work for animation, like dawing out situations to account for excessive talking and thinking. This is why a lot of the best anime is original content and not based on a manga. At least that's my opinion on it.

Actually the manga is much faster paced than the anime for some reason :P what would take 10 minutes in the anime took 1 page in the manga.

That's because like a lot of Anime... the Manga was still going on while the show was being made.  Instead of filler they decided on really long drawn out conversations and such.
