No. The whole story of Star Ocean 4 (which is a prequel to the rest of the SO series), is that World War 3 started in 2063, destroying most every part of the Earth (hence the nukes going off, and the pictures of ruined cityscapes). Humanity makes contacts with aliens and rebuilds somewhat, and sends the first crews off to explore space - Which your character is part of.

 

 

And then your ship crash on an underdevelopped planet with a medieval setting where you stay for 3/4 of the game killing enemy with a sword and magic *argh!*. Sorry, I love SO battle system (better real time one out there, though I didn't play Vesperia yet) but I kind of have a love/hate thing going when it come to the story.

Not really surprised they decided to go with a prequel, they kind of dug themself in a hole with SO3 story at the end.
