If you go the unlocked Tmobile route (the only other choice) it's still pretty expensive (Tmobile is maybe 10 bucks cheaper). If you aren't going to get service and just use the iphone features without actually using it as a phone you should probably go for the much cheaper ipod touch (which, with wifi, can use some VOIP programs to make calls REALLY cheaply) or a PSP.
This is of course if you aren't in another country, in which case I have no idea what the provider situation is like.
Another great idea though, is to get the 3G from ATT for one month, then as soon as the month is up pay the cancelation fee of 150 and bingo, a brand new unlocked 3G iphone for about 300 dollars.
I would still just pay the extra per month personally though, a lot of the great things like virtual voice mail just don't work with Tmobile, I have a few friends who did the unlock/jailbreak thing and mine works way better with a lot more application options TBH.
