The truth is like a slap in the face... having your anolog sticks in a 5th gen possition when it's the 7th generation of consoles shows how retarded the DS3 controller is.
That sounds very strange to me.
The symmetrical placement of sticks for gaming date back far further. Just remember SmashTV in the arcades where the sticks were placed symmetrically. Also with the Amiga port people would place the two arcade sticks symmetrically. IMO that feels the most natural and comfortable.
With regard to the thumb position, my opinion as a physical therapist who worked a lot with ergo therapists. The PS3 sticks are placed in a position where the maximum range of motions of the thumb is possible, this means for instance if you had an accident you are most likely to still perform the needed range of motion of the thumb. The 360's asymmetric placement is IMO not a good one if using both thumbs simultaneously, the PS3's stick placement is far more natural and neutral, placed in the MLPP position (which is of course normally the same for left and right thumb).
