Beating HD-DVD was the easy part. Beating the entrenched standard is where I believe Blu-Ray will falter. DVD had many advantages that it could boast of over VHS: durability, random access, extras, multiple languages, and yes, better image and sound quality. Blu-Ray's only advantage over DVD is in image and sound quality, and then only to a degree that leaves many people wondering if it's really worth the price. Overcoming that obstacle will be what makes or breaks the format.

Honestly, I think Blu-Ray will become the next laserdisc: a niche format for technophiles, but nowhere near the mainstream.

allow me to reinterate this for those who may have missed this very intellegent post.

VHS to DVD advantages: better picture, better sound, rewinding no longer needed, better durablilty, random access points, multiple languages audio, subtitles, new special feature capabilities (like commentary), significantly smaller size of media.

DVD to BD advantages: better picture, better sound, Restart at exit scene after ejecting my dvd player already does that, Better durability (okay true but dvd doesn't have near the same level of duribility issues that VHS had and therefore not a significant improvement to me.  for fucks sake i have almost 400 dvd and exactly 1 that won't play anymore), more language tracks more =/= new feature , more subtitles more =/= new feature, new special feature capabilities (like online view) (explain in further detail please), significantly larger disk space (and i care?? that extra space is so that you can have HD video/sound.  it doesn't make my movies any longer and with the execption of LotR special edition what movie takes up more than 1 dvd?).

i've got nothing against HD but seriously they could have done a lot more to make the new format more appealing than only image/sound quality improvements.
