If you want mega-classic horror, might I suggest

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, directed by Robert Wiene in 1920.

or Nosferatu, directed by F. W. Murnau in 1922.

Those are both in the public domain so they're both free online.

I forget the name of the magazine, but a couple years ago these guys came up with a top 10 list of horror films, and the top 2 were Suspiria (Dario Argento, 1977) and the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre (Tobe Hooper, 1974) , so you should see those if you haven't. Suspiria has great music by Goblin, which makes the film for me. Supposedly they're remaking Suspiria as a live action film in the U.S. starring Natalie Portman, and as an anime in Japan.

If you want to try some recent Japanese horror, I recommend Cure, directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa in 1997. It's kind of a detective mystery psychological thriller, but it scared the shit out of me.

The original Japanese Ring was really good by Hideo Nakata in 1999.

And I'm not sure if you can call it horror, but Sion Sono's Suicide Circle (aka Suicide Club, depending on your translation) from 2002 is brilliant and I highly recommend it. If you haven't seen it, here's the first scene:

And I think the previous mentions of The Shining, The Evil Dead, Psycho, Alien, and Event Horizon were good.

But I must warn you, 28 Days Later is amazing, and 28 Weeks Later is a bunch of bullshit. One was a great solid movie welcome in zombie film history, and the other was a pathetic cash-in that was dumber and more formulaic.

And if you're in it for the lulz, you can't fail with Jason X. He gets some sort of sci-fi hockey mask enhancement that makes no sense. They try to trap him in a holodeck so he can kill imaginary teenagers forever. It's just... fucking brilliant.
